The role of gender, like most of the values of Western civilization, is in the throes of confusion and redefinition.
There has been a war declared on gender for decades now and we are seeing the ever-progressing insistence that “our rights” / need to live up to status quo should trump God’s order for things. Let’s start things off with this wonderfully explained definition:
What does the Bible say about gender?
“God states, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…male and female, he created them” (Genesis 1:26,27 KJV). When God created people, gender was a basis for which we were to bear his likeness. Apart from the obvious differences in the physical nature of gender (man and woman), he also gave the concepts of spiritual gender—the way we feel and behave in response to stimuli—to correspond to the man and the woman he created. When we speak of the terms “masculinity” and “femininity,” we are referring to these feelings and behaviors. Men are expected to be masculine and women are expected to be feminine, though it is also possible for men and women to possess qualities characteristic of the opposite gender. However, their primary spiritual makeup will be in line with their physical gender. Because both men and women are relational beings created in his image, gender is a means through which God reflects his spiritual balance with more genders here on earth.” (CBN.com, Dr. David E. James) CULTURES GENDER WAR An age-old battle – a “Women vs. Men” or “Us against them” and even more disturbing, “anything goes mentality with transgenderism” too? The focus will be on the feministic worldview and exposing its true colors moreso. Recent trends with feminism. Therefore, we now see an increasing ushering in of generational, social and economic competition and not surprisingly, negative repercussions to the family unit and moral breakdown.
As women, we lose our unique power God provided when we decided we wanted more and began competing with men. Thus, we got locked into a power struggle that never existed from God’s vantage point.
Now we have a generation of women with inferiority complexes believing that they are oppressed and subservient and somehow thinking that becoming like-men is going to give us the fulfillment we seek.
The “battle of the sexes” doesn’t have to be!
Feminism is apparently: “the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social and economic equality to men.” Using some of the terms from the definition; Advocating for women rights such as; to be free from abusive / truly oppressive situations like those of radical religions hiding women; abusing them, mistreating as second class citizens; I would absolutely say is necessary to fight against and bring voice to their plight. Therefore, we must not be ignorant of the experiences of our sisters both abroad and domestically who face such terrifying situations and threats just for being a girl or woman/gendercide indeed. However, under this banner of supposed ‘equality’ it has evolved into a monster as we see from history and the more radical changes today. Thus, there is a serious problem with this ideology as a whole, as I will continue below.
Equality means; sameness.
Why are we trying to be?
I have heard many arguments coming from both sides of the coin through the years. I’d simply like to examine some extremes of this movement and test them against scripture.
Equal Standing Before God
The Bible shows that neither the man nor the woman has a special advantage in being a Christian. Christ does not choose men in preference to women, or relate to men more directly. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: For you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 4:28). It is true that women are dependent upon men, yet it is equally true that men are dependent upon women. “Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 11:11). They are “heirs together to the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7). “God created man in His own image…male and female” (Genesis 1:27, 5:1-2). Both of them together are the likeness of God.
At the core, the feministic ideology / movement has brought on a serious problem with authority. God’s authority in particular…. when it comes to roles and behavior. Those most influential feministic voices are often loud, defiant, seductive, rebellious and down right angry, prideful nearly all the time as we see many of the protests. To what end?
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
1 Peter 5:5-6
This is precisouly why having a biblical worldview changes everything. And humbles us as women to see the bigger picture of our identity in Christ.
If we seek to honor God’s Word,
we must be rooted in the Created Order – not culture.
3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Titus 2:3-5 (ESV)
We are free to choose our path and while I am not addressing other female lifestyles such as singleness or the sensitive issue of females facing infertility – the core issue is at hand; rebelling against God’s authority as a (woman/gender) still sheds light; thus, not to discredit our God-given abilities, skills, talents as women at all. Though, the more we trust God with our gender / heavenly position, those wonderful attributes we have been given are most often needed and best served within our churches, communities / women’s ministry, our homes / children – we simply cannot deny this truth as we are wired to nurture. Truly, without a biblically-strong foundation in the home-life, or godly rulers – society will inevitably rebel and crumble – thus, face judgment.
In fact, I too have felt the alluring tension, the lure and pull of the culture for years fighting against God’s order and I share all this with you coming from personal experience. We must however, remember what we were uniquely designed / created for. In understanding and embracing our femaleness, role, behavior toward the Lord and man/husband and our children, can we begin to find true contentment. In fact, our Creator God blesses our obedience to this order; not to withhold abundance and blessing but to purify us as women bringing the most glory to the Lord.
Make no mistake, a number of changes with regard to gender have emerged that may be deemed beneficial and positive. Nevertheless, the overall impact on American civilization has been negative, and the erosion of femininity has ushered in a host of evils that are hastening America’s moral implosion (e.g., abortion and homosexuality). Concomitant with the effort to eradicate gender differentiation has been the degradation of masculinity and the restructuring of the family unit (the fundamental building block of humanity—Genesis 1:27; 2:24). As womanhood has been devalued and her function altered, the rest of society has suffered dramatically. After all, women inevitably exert a profound influence on culture and society—for good or ill. Virtuous femininity is the glue that holds human civilization together. In the words of American poet William Ross Wallace’s immortal poem, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Rules the World” (1865). Sadly for America, feminism has overturned the rocker, thrown the baby out with the bathwater, punched Dad in the face, and stomped away from the house in a huff. (Apologeticspress.org)
THE DARK SIDE OF FEMINISM
Feminist jargon used against God’s created order: “Sexist, Traditional, Expectations.”
Feminist Issues: Wage gap, reproductive rights/abortion, household responsibilities, children, marriage, unrealistic beauty ideals, no respect for female leaders / no female president – are a few of the majors according to feminists.
All the while, as the political & feministic social agenda progresses, we have 32 facts that show how men are being systematically emasculated in America!
Pressures abound no doubt. However, as a female I can say firsthand from my experience – this competitive feministic mindset has made women more discontent, depressed, competitive, bitter and disrespectful toward each other, their home-life with children as well as toward their husband. I too, have experienced the repercussions of leaving my responsibilities at home, mostly because of financial strain / needs at that time. Yet, in pursuit to also be known, to be loved, affirmed elsewhere in all honesty (Jesus corrected that mindset thankfully!); a time when I believed that I must “fit this image” of fighting for position to appease my guilty desire for attention, recognition, greed all vain pursuits that only left me dissatisfied in the end and caused more problems in my marriage because I was running away from the Lord’s order for my life.
Surely, in choosing work outside of the home as mothers, our motives must be pure and we should attain mutual understanding and agreement first, with our husband. There are situations that can lead to more disarray when choosing to work outside the home (as noted in links above as well as here) – tempting situations arise that have been proven about divorce and infidelity being more rampant today also among high-profile corporate work. Of course, not every situation or person fits this negative stigma of working outside the home. However, the temptations are more prevalent it seems.
Nevertheless, as culture advances in this pursuit of supposed freedom from religious oppression and seek supposed “female liberation,” this headstrong attitude has also led to untold numbers of innocent bloodshed today through abortion proponents for example.
Also, the shameful sexualization of women participating of their own accord most times baffles me – ‘Warning’ ahead; scantily clad young women being displayed basically as prostitutes (selling female image for profit and influence) and out there as “normalcy” yet is deceivingly promoted as “sexual liberation, freedom.” So, tell me how something like this (images below) and promoting greedy sexualized attitudes somehow enhances our dignity as women?
The bible already knew we would struggle with these temptations… see Proverbs 7 talks specifically about the adulteress and her ways.
Why haven’t our minds thought this whole demeaning concept through? Mainly because we have chosen this path/tolerated it for far too long and have been conditioned through media hype, ever pushing the boundaries of sexuality. Likewise, in our progressive feministic worldview pursuits we have arrogantly – murdered innocent life inside us, seduced souls with our feminine prowess into; adultery, STD’s, teen pregnancies, porn addiction, having unnatural affections/lesbianism, to women dressing ever more masculine, behaving aggressively, loud-lacking self-control, becoming deviant, and usurping (to overthrow) the husband’s God-given authority to name a few.
A plea…. before you leave this page in an offense – consider – we all are accountable for our own choices yes, both men and women, but how are you using your femaleness and how are your life choices turning out?
Do you have peace? Are you self controlled? Are you pursuing purity as a single woman? Are you in a committed relationship, married? Are you giving up addictions?
An important example to remember from the Bible is when Jesus told the woman caught in adultery, “Go, and sin no more.” Believe me, this lesson I had to learn a few times before really taking God and His Word seriously! This was and still is a loving warning to her not to return to her life of sin – Jesus’ words extended His mercy, yet demanded holiness. There are a few other testimonies of Jesus speaking to people about resisting the lure to sin here. Therefore, His protection and love for her supernaturally transformed her life as she then became of faithful follower of His. For us today too!
These examples prove, Christ’s resurrection power in us to overcome sin and rebellion ladies. Not perfection, but repentance. Click on the heart vs. link for the contrasts of worldly women and godly women; the evidence of the power of Christ in us: Old heart vs. the new heart in Christ
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
The Bible Still Has The Correct Perspective
Nevertheless, Scripture never discounts the female intellect, never downplays the talents and abilities of women, or discourages the right use of women’s spiritual gifts. But whenever the Bible expressly talks about the marks of an excellent woman, the stress is always on feminine virtue. The most significant women in Scripture were influential not because of their careers, but because of their character. The message these women collectively give is not about “gender equality”; it’s about true feminine excellence. And that is always exemplified in moral and spiritual qualities rather than by social standing, wealth, or physical appearance. (gty.org)
Relational & Marital perspectives; equality with a Biblical worldview will be lovingly understood as…
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
